Brokenshire Medical Center marked a significant milestone in advanced cancer care on January 18, 2026, with the successful performance of its first Laparoscopic Radical Cystectomy with Bilateral Pelvic Lymph Node Dissection and Extracorporeal Ileal Conduit. This landmark procedure represents an important advancement in the hospital’s capability to manage complex urologic cancers using modern, minimally invasive techniques.

The surgery was performed on a patient diagnosed with Stage II Invasive Urothelial Carcinoma of the bladder, a condition that requires highly specialized multidisciplinary care. The case highlights the institution’s growing expertise in delivering comprehensive, evidence-based treatment for patients with complex malignancies.

The surgical team was led by Urologic Oncologist Dr. Jay-R Enojo, together with Dr. Porferio Serrano III, Dr. Mevy Galicia, and Dr. Al-Amin Manebpel. Anesthetic management was provided by Dr. Tiffany Anyog-Lu and Dr. Cristabelle Toh, whose expertise ensured optimal intraoperative stability during the technically demanding and lengthy procedure.

What made this case particularly notable was the carefully coordinated treatment strategy implemented even before surgery. In accordance with international standards of care, the patient underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy administered by Medical Oncologist Dr. Abdiel Galicia, with close medical co-management by Cardiologist Dr. Lilibeth Araniego.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy plays a critical role in the treatment of muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Extensive clinical evidence demonstrates that administering chemotherapy prior to surgery can improve overall survival, reduce the risk of micrometastatic disease, and enhance long-term oncologic outcomes. By targeting potential cancer cells beyond the bladder at an early stage, this approach strengthens the likelihood of durable disease control and highlights the importance of coordinated, team-based cancer care.

Following the successful completion of chemotherapy and comprehensive preoperative optimization, the patient proceeded to definitive surgical management. The laparoscopic approach allowed for precise dissection while minimizing surgical trauma. Bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection enabled accurate staging and improved oncologic clearance, while urinary diversion was accomplished through an extracorporeal ileal conduit. The procedure was completed successfully without intraoperative complications.

This landmark case not only represents the first laparoscopic radical cystectomy performed at Brokenshire Medical Center, but also underscores the institution’s commitment to delivering comprehensive, guideline-driven cancer care.
